The Experiment

There's too much food in Landcroft House at all times. Our bank manager recently commented on how often we eat out. We talk about going on a different diet or detox plan every week. This is the latest plan: we buy no food apart from milk until we can take it no more. We have between the kitchen, basement and out-house, 2 freezers, three fridges and a large pantry. The order in which we will run out of key things will be cheese, eggs then crisps. How long will we last?

you've already caved in. Want to come around to ours. We are going to try and cook Tarteflette, basically cheesy (reblochon), creamy, meaty (lardons), potatoe bake. Sounds nice, eh?

yes please! sounds absolutley delicious. we are allowed to eat at friends houses just not allowed to spend money on food until the cupboards are bare. we've not run out of wine yet so we can bring a bottle!

Robert you forgot the bit about the wine!

*looks at the collection of bottles admiringly*

If you want to lose weight as well as save money, best way I reckon is to have a bet. Set a timeframe, say 4 or 6 weeks, agree a high value prize that each person really wants and away you go. Fairest result would be who loses most as a % of their original weight. For extra spice, why not provide weekly updates on your blog. Even the loser will have lost loads and in the end won't mind coughing up.

Yes. That's a good idea. But I'm still thinking about cheese...

We're in the same boat. Mountains of storecupboard stuff and a fridge freezer both in the kitchen and the shed. Both of said freezers are full to bursting (I even had to put a bag of frozen peas in a neighbours freezer the other day...!).

Put it this way - I made a lovely supper for friends last night that included 8 fillet steaks that I just happened to find in the freezer. Hmmm.

Very nice idea Anthony and blimey do we need to shift some pounds in this house!
Divinemrsm, I could feed the whole street for months from my freezers alone. By the way, do I know your husband?

Ever since our freezer died and defrosted enough food to feed our street and the Old People's home round the corner, David has restricted me to buying only necessities. Apart from necessary frozen foods (Peas, fishfingers, handy Findus pizzas and the contents of the butchers in East Street market) we've got ice (for gin)and a bottle of vodka (for me). Don't get him started on the store cupboards!

Silvana - you once very kindly emailed him your shepherds pie recipe while we were on holiday in France (at my sister's house which is the URL that my name links to)...!

But otherwise then no - I don't believe that you know him.

We'd be lost without you in our kitchen though.

Thanks Divinemrsm! Glad to be of service!

So - have you given in and gone-a-shopping? I was having a discussion with friends the other night about what would absolutely make you go to the shop. We thought toilet paper...

BTW - Silvana's Warm Lamb Salad is an absolute staple in our house. Mmmm.

Mmm Tarteflette! I shall be having that very very soon!

R and S, don't forget to tell us all about the progress of your experiment!

So, the answer to 'how long can we last?' is 6 days :(
