Route Master

Let no-one say my husband's not a romantic man. My 10th anniversary present's arrived. Yes, it's satellite navigation. Not cake, chocolates or flowers.
I do love technology, a Wii would have been brill and so would a Black Berry, but a TomTom!! Those of you who know me will know my route obsession and will have been asked by me at every party 'how did you get here?' and 'which bridge did you cross?' and 'how long did it take, door-to-door?' It's isn't my fault and I know I'm turning into my dad. I do plan every route the night before. I study my beloved map and I try and engage Robert in conversation on his preferred route. In my job I get sent all over the place, usually with bags of knives and crates of food, so I'm usually driving and maybe this thing will turn out to be my friend. I'm just not sure. Anyone got one? Good or bad?

Can I just say, in my defence, that it's chocolates and dinner at Locanda Locatelli tmrw night!

I have had Tom Tom since the first one was launched.
I dont know how I managed without it to be honest, it is fantastic.
I have all the european maps and loads of extras if you want me to put them on yours next time you are home for the weekend.

My Tom Tom does have an obsession with sending me down the M6 Toll road though.

I've had one a while, and yes they're great.

Especially in nightmare city centres!

Thanks James and VS!

They're great for finding specific addresses, just don't switch it on until you're about a mile or so away. On a recent trip to Liverpool mine nearly got thrown out of the car window as it was sending me to Liverpool via Derby. I live north of Derby. Go figure.....

they are super little things but the number of people trying to find Leeds by allowing their computer to send them along dark country lanes in our area when the A1 motorway is just a few miles away, or indeed up an impassable farm track (which actually entails opening a gate!) furthur up the dale, rather appropriately at a village called Crackpot, does perhaps mean they should be used more for show, a bit like one of those nodding dogs, than anything even remotely connected to navigation. Do be careful with that thing won't you dear

was it Bill bryson who observed that only in England can two people, upon meeting, spend the first hour discussing how the one that is visiting arrived there by the B such and such, taking a right at the A something or other...

Right, so then as long as I don't use it to actually get anyway I've never been before then it's brilliant?

Jackie - yes 10 years since I met you in that house you lived in (on Faroe Road?) and was introduced to Rob in a breakbeat club by that bitch Merrilees (not really, thanks Merril) and dragged him back to my flat in Camberwell. The same flat that I've just put on the market this same day. Ok, back to the ironing and Capital Gains Tax research.

Silvana, you will wonder how you ever managed without sat nav! I love mine (she's called Grace) and I greet her warmly every time I get into the car(maybe that's just me!). I do tend to argue with her though.

On the way home from Chatham Docks once (don't ask), Grace told me to turn left at this particular junction marked "Nether Wallop 6 miles" or similar local directions.....the right turn was clearly marked "London" which is where I obviously wanted to go, I'd told her that by putting my post code in the correct little box thingy.

Anyway, Grace told me to turn left quite aggressively (she knows what I'm like)so I did, pointing out to her equally aggressively that London was the other way. I got home eventually, passed through several lovely little villages and managed to avoid a massive pile up on the Chatham to London road. So she's psychic too!

Well done Grace! So, come on NMoO what were you doing at Chatham Docks?

Silvana.....would you believe that I mistook Chatham Docks for Chatham Historical Dockyard? See, you can have all the sat nav systems in the world and if you're bit wappy like me then they're no good at all!
