Kaput!

We woke up to a very cold house this morning - especially in Scrap's tiny room as he's got a little fireplace with a drafty chimney. The boiler that’s been dripping for a month gave up its fight for life today. Nice timing considering the money we’ve just spent on radiators, ballcocks, a pump and a coldwater tank. Adrian the plumber is meeting me at Landcroft later to assess the situation but it’s inevitably going to mean a new boiler, at £2,000+. It wouldn’t be so hard to swallow if the existing boiler had been more than 18 months old - I thought they were meant to last 10 years! Anyway, we’ve got no heating or hot water so can we all come to yours tonight for a shower? And maybe a night in your cosy spareroom? Anyone?
I guess it’ll be the Comfort Inn, in Vauxhall then. But at least we’ll get a great breakfast in Estrella, the best cafe/ restaurant in the world. Yep, every cloud does have a silver lining doesn’t it!

Does that Spanish website REALLY think that the Comfort Inn is in South Kensington?

oh god NO! surely that's some kind of manufacturing defect? is it under warranty? how about i send over my cats to keep you warm? they're good hot water bottles.

Typically, the diagnosis is about as bad as it could be. Original boiler was never right for the job, going to have to take this that and the other out, drain the system etc. Result: new ugly giant boiler in the middle of the kitchen at a cost of about £3k. I've decided I am not going to worry about it though - straight on the credit card and forget about it. Send cats round for a cuddle asap!

your room is all ready for you with the bed turned and little chocolate treats on your pillows. If you hurry you can have some fish pie!

My goodness, how fantastic! I'm drinking wine to keep myself warm but I'm sure I can call a cab. Can't say no to them chocolate treats. Or fish pie....

thats mad - a decent condensing boiler costs a grand and can be fitted in a day or two.
