Yesterday, in a fit of over-excited flippancy, I suggested that Alan Johnston's first priority on getting released after 16 weeks in a cell in Palestine might be to get a haircut. It was silly, obviously. I was taking the piss, having noticed the difference between his usual BBC look and the skinny bloke on the news. Frankly, I felt a bit guilty about it. I felt like I'd done him a disservice, run him down, been disrespectful of what he'd been through. And stuff.
So, you can imagine my delight - and there really is no other word for it - when I read the newspaper this morning...
What a chap indeed...

Surely though, if he didn't have access to a razor (he can't have many haircut options), he couldn't have shaved his beard as well? Joking aside, I heard his interview on the today programme yesterday and it was incredibly moving. The sense of relief for him, his family and friends must be beyond words.
