Hey Vana. Belles here (Walkinshaw), how are you? Love your blog. Mine is not nearly as interesting!
Do you remember Dee Stuart? Her dad is the lead singer of 10cc.. he wrote that song for her mum.. Hope to see you guys sometime. xx

I can take it or leave it S. I wouldn't switch the radio off if it came on, which is my yardstick for such things. 'tis a tad dreary though...

I heard 'Horse with No Name' today. Now THAT DID make me turn the radio off.

It really, really sucks. I'd like to elaborate but I can't.

By coincidence I heard this for the first time in years today. I had bought one of those newspaper giveaway CDs in a charity shop - a best of 10cc (and by another coincidence it cost me 10p). I remember really liking this song before, but that probably because I was a lovelorn teenager at the time and that whispered 'be quiet' felt, like, someone really knew how I felt. Now? meh.

Well - here's a surprise - I like it. Or, maybe, I admire it, which is a different thing, but I certainly don't dislike it. I think that 32 years of bad associations have made this song difficult to love, but it's a fantastic pop record none the less. In 1975 no one - no one - had ever heard anything like this before. Bands were still four-square blokes with guitars and drums, singers played the piano. I think this is sort of metapop, pop about pop, pop that looks around a few future corners and tries to report back what it's seen.

As my great showbiz pal Trevor Horn said to me last week, "I'm Not In Love was like hearing the 80s in the 70s," which is about as neat a quote as I can imagine. So, it's thumbs up from me again...

but Valentine, Horse With No Name contains the single greatest verse in the pop canon, ergo:

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

Plants and birds and rock and things?

THE HEAT WAS HOT???

GENIUS.
