Meg Baird: River Song (Wichita, 2007)Meg Baird is out of Espers - that's her on the bottom right. She's recorded this solo album that's really very good. She plucks mandolins and guitars and all that sort of thing. According to Billboard, Baird "has a long held an interest in rural, Appalachian-style balladry", well, haven't we all, sweetheart? Anyway, this is great.
Seefeel: Climactic Phase 3 (Too Pure, 1993)This fantastic Seefeel record is getting a special re-release because it's 14 years old or something. Is that a valid reason for a re-release? I don't know - I don't make the rules, you know! Anyway, I played this album in the office yesterday. Half wanted to know what it was and how they could buy it while the other half wanted to throw it out of the window into the street. If you like records that sound a bit like they're broken but the people who made them are so walloped on naughty-sweeties that they just don't care then you'll love this. I know I do.

River Song v nice, I always have time for a flutey, breathy female vocal - but it does go on a bit without much happening between beginning and end? Or is that what 'rural, Appalachian ballads' are supposed to do?
I see what you're driving at there, H, but, for me, it's the "going on a bit without much happening between beginning and end" that I sort of like (cf: Seefeel). Maybe it's because I just hear too much music every day, but I find that it's the ones that welcome me in, but then let me drift around a bit without someone DEMANDING MY ATTENTION that I tend to really fall for. LIke, as I write this I'm listening to Rock My Boat on the new DNTEL album - and it's so slow and minimal and airy with a really tiny vocal and I love it already! Will post later...
But it takes so much more effort and time and concentration to listen to music that is simple! Hence it is also more rewarding. Unfortunately, I just don't have that time - so when I listen to something it is usually with a pint of wine in my hand, on a Friday night, ready to rock, so it's 'come on! entertain me!' post rock my boat pls.
